2009 Grammy Nominations

It seems that the 2009 Grammy Nominations have American Rapper Lil Wayne and British rock band Coldplay vying for top honors. At first it seemed that Coldplay had the upper hand with seven nominations, but Lil Wayne has topped that fantastic achievement with a whopping eight Grammy nominations.

Next year will mark the 51st annual Grammy Awards, where the best of the best will be battling it out for top honors. The 51st annual Grammy Awards will take place in Los Angeles at the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences on February 8, 2009. So far contenders for the ‘Album of the Year’ award include not only Coldplay (Viva La Vida) and Lil Wayne (Tha Carter III), but also Ne-Yo (Year of the Gentleman), Radiohead (In Rainbows) and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss (Raising Sand). At this point there is really no guessing as to who will go home with the most awards under their belt.

Thus far the competition for the major categories is fierce. Adele’s ‘Chasing Pavements’ and Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’ albums are competing with Leona Lewis’ ‘Bleeding Love’, MIA’s ‘Paper Planes’ and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss’ ‘Please Read the Letter’ for the honor of ‘Record of the Year’. The nominations for ‘Song of the Year’ include ‘American Boy’ (Estelle featuring Kanye West), ‘Chasing Pavements’ (Adele), ‘Love Song’ (Sara Bareilles), ‘I’m Your’s’ (Jason Mraz) and ‘Viva La Vida’ (Coldplay). The contenders for ‘Best New Artist’ are Duffy, Adele, Jonas Brothers, Lady Antebellum and Jazmine Sullivan.

The 2009 Grammy Nominations mean a lot to the nominees. If they succeed and win their respective awards, their record sales will likely enjoy a massive boost. The boost is more than needed, since the music industry is currently facing a shrinking demand for CDs while Internet Piracy is reaching new heights. Winning the Grammy’s means that the artists will not only be receiving recognition, but that they will be exposed to a much broader audience. Winning a Grammy Award also denotes that the music is of a certain caliber and that is another thing that will help to boost sales. Moreover Record Labels are generally much happier to promote and market music by artists that have won a Grammy.

With the 2009 Grammy Nominations announced, it is only a short time before the winners are announced. Fans will no doubt be looking forward to that time with great anticipation.
