Music Industry Continues to Evolve with Sale of EMI

Highlighting the changes advancing technology is having on the music industry, after 80 years of operating as an independent music distributor, EMI has concluded agreements which break the company up. Currently owned by Citigroup Inc., EMI reportedly sold for a total of US$4.1 billion, with the recorded-music division going to Universal Music Group, owned by French corporation Vivendi, for $1.9 billion, and EMI Music Publishing going to a consortium of six investors led by Sony. While the deal still needs the official nod from regulators, all parties concerned appear to agree that this is a formality. The sale of EMI leaves Warner Music Group, which had reportedly made a bid of $2 billion, out in the cold, but nonetheless considered to be one of the Big Three of the music industry – Universal, Sony and Warner.

ICM Honors Top Musicians

With fifty years in the entertainment world to his name, Ricky Skaggs was named both Musician of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year, at the 17th Annual ICM Faith, Family and Country Awards Show held at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville on Friday 28 October 2011. Other big winners of the evening included Lady Antebellum, The Fox Brothers and Justin Moore as awards were given out in over twenty categories, honoring seasoned musicians and newcomers to the world of inspirational country music.

Western Canadian Music Award Winners

The Yukon Arts Center hosted the 2011 Western Canadian Music Awards on Sunday 23 October in an exciting event honoring the musical achievements of artists from Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Yukon and Northwest Territories. The ceremony was hosted by Grant Lawrence of CBC Radio3 and was the culmination of the 2011 Breakout West Music Festival in Whitehorse – an annual event which includes conferences, panels, performances and opportunities to network within the independent music industry.
