2011 CMT Awards

The public plays a vital role in the CMT Music Awards, as it is the votes of fans that decide who the winners will be. Nashville, in Tennessee, is home to the awards that are hosted every June, and was inaugurated as the Music City News Country Awards in 1967. Awards are allocated to country television performances and music videos and before internet sites were available, fans would vote through the mail or by telephone. The main categories for the CMT Awards were male and female vocalist of the year, song of the year and entertainer of the year. In 2005, the name of the ceremony permanently became the CMT Music Awards and is held in conjunction with the CMA Music Festival.

BPI Updating the Parental Advisory Scheme

Amidst news that Britain's total digital music sales have exceeded £1 billion, the British Recorded Music Industry, or BPI, has just announced that they will be updating their Parental Advisory Scheme to include online services. The current scheme is 15 years old, with Parental Guidance logos appearing on CDs since 1995. The updated guidelines will see the familiar logo appearing on videos and songs that can be streamed or downloaded from UK digital music services.

2011 Pop Music Awards Review

On 17 May 2011, BMI hosted their 2011 Pop Music Awards ceremony; paying tribute to the songwriters who either make their own careers through the writing of songs, or enhance the careers of singers and bands. It was held in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in California and was hosted by Del Bryant (BMI President and CEO), Phil Graham (Senior VP for BMI, publisher and writer) and Barbara Cane (VP and General Manager for BMI). It was the 59th hosting of the awards ceremony and not only were the songwriters honored, but the top earning songs of the year as well.

MTV's O Music Awards – Setting a Trend

The first ever O Music Awards turned out to be a party of note in Los Angeles on 28 April, as MTV celebrated the growing trend toward online music. While some of the artists performed and accepted their awards via technology from all over the world, the fans where crowded around the stage on Freemont Street where rock duo Matt & Kim kept the party going.

Most Downloaded Latin Artists Named

The recently published global download survey carried out by Nokia’s Ovi Music confirmed what Shakira fans no doubt already knew – for the second year running, the popular Colombian singer took the top spot for most downloaded Latin artist. She takes top honors on the download charts in more than thirty-eight countries. Moreover, no less than five of her songs feature among the ten most popular Latin songs worldwide. Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) was the most downloaded song of 2010 – and is still riding high. The other songs featured in the Top Ten are: She Wolf at #3; Loca at #5; Gypsey at # 8; and Hips Don’t Lie at #9.
