Happy Birthday Michael Jackson

On 25 June 2009, the world was devastated by the news that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, had passed away. The outpouring of grief and disbelief was overwhelming. On 29 August 2010, Jackson would have celebrated his 52nd birthday, and both fans and the music industry rallied together to celebrate his birthday in his absence and pay tribute to one of the most iconic entertainers of our time. The festivities were hosted on Saturday, 28 August 2010, and thousands of Michael Jackson enthusiasts attended to show their support and love for this great musician.

Michael Jackson was not only a successful recording artist, but a philanthropist, songwriter and an entertainer. The Guinness World Records have him listed as the most thriving artist in the world. Before taking on the international music industry, Jackson was a part of the well known Jackson 5, after which he embarked on his solo career that began in 1971. He released hit after hit and captured the world with songs such as Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It, Black and White, We Are The World and Smooth Criminal. He also influenced the dance industry with moves such as the moonwalk and robot, and was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984. In the year 2002, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and amongst the hundreds of awards he received were twenty-six American Music Awards and thirteen Grammy’s.

A massive crowd gathered in front of Jackson’s childhood home in Gary (Indiana), where Rudy Clay opened the proceedings with a speech in which he said: "The passing of our favourite son, Michael Jackson, is still fresh in our hearts. A year later, on the day before his birthday, we honor his memory as a great and giving person and as the world's greatest entertainer." Spike Lee also paid tribute to Michael Jackson, and at various locations, such as The Autry Centre at the Los Angeles Museum, small celebrations were hosted over the weekend. Michael Jackson still lives on through his music and in the hearts of thousand of loyal fans all over the world.
