New BLO Music Director

Founded in the year 1976, the Boston Lyric Opera has become a vital part of New England’s history and tradition, and is one of the most well known opera companies in the USA. The Citi Performing Arts Centre Shubert Theatre in Boston is home to the opera company, hosting at least three major productions annually. Its diverse and entertaining repertoire has been inspiring audiences for over thirty years and, with the backing of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Boston Lyric Opera continues to thrill and captivate music enthusiasts.

The position of music director for the Boston Lyric Opera has been open for the last two years. But after much deliberation and search, the post was offered to David Angus, who gladly accepted and signed a three year contract with the Boston Lyric Opera. Angus, a conductor from Britain, will be responsible for the opera, including singers, repertoire and musicians. His vast experience and superb team of general directors and artistic directors should make this new musical venture enjoyable and successful. David Angus has worked with other companies such as the BBC Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Glimmerglass Opera and the Canadian Opera Company, gaining a wealth of knowledge and an impressive reputation. Midsummer Night’s Dream will be the only production awaiting Angus in the 2011 season, with at least two productions per year thereafter. For his debut performance with the Boston Lyric Opera, Angus led a performance of Idomeneo by Mozart, and impressed both audience and opera company members. His official contract only begins in the 2010 – 2011 season.

Angus expressed his excitement and enthusiasm for his new role by saying: “I felt so much at home in the company and in Boston that I didn’t hesitate for a second when I was invited to become the music director. I believe that the company already has great potential to grow, and, under Esther Nelson’s inspired leadership, I am confident that the future will be very exciting. I can’t wait to be a part of this, and I am looking forward with the greatest of enthusiasm to returning to work with the company in this new capacity.”
