MTV Europe Music Awards Nominees Announced

Set to take place at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on November 10, the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards have published nominees, with fans no doubt ready to support their favorite performers by voting online. Justin Timberlake has been nominated in five categories – Best Male, Best Look, Best Live, Best US Act and Best Video – while rapper Macklemore and DJ Ryan Lewis have been nominated for Best Song, Best US Act, Best New, Best World Stage and Best Hip Hop. In spite of (or maybe because of) her controversial performance of her single We Can’t Stop at the 2013 MTV VMA, Miley Cyrus has been nominated for Best Female, Best US Act, Best Pop and Best Video. Other nominees include Green Day, Black Sabbath, 30 Seconds to Mars, Linkin Park, Queens of the Stone Age and the Killers.

Established in 1994 by MTV Networks Europe, the MTV Europe Music Awards were seen as Europe‘s version of the American MTV Video Music Awards, but have developed into a prestigious event in its own right. Hosted at different venues each year, the awards are well supported by fans on both sides of the Atlantic. The 2012 event took place at Festhalle Frankfurt, and this year will be held at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam – a 17,000 seat indoor arena.

Award categories have changed over the years, with current categories including, Best Song, Best Video, Best Female, Best Male, Best New Act, Best Pop, Best Rock, Best Hip-Hop, Best Alternative, Best Live Act, Best Push Act, Best World State Performance, Best Electronic, Biggest Fans, Best Worldwide Act and Global Icon. Special awards include Free Your Mind, MTV Voice Award, Global Icon Award, Ultimate Legend Award and Artist’s Choice Award.

An interesting mix of performers has been selected for Best Live, including Taylor Swift, Green Day, Justin Timberlake, Pink and Beyoncé – with the last two being nominated only in this category. The Biggest Fans category includes Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, One Direction, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Tokio Hotel.
