Rochester International Jazz Festival
Jazz enthusiasts living in New York will already be aware of the Rochester International Jazz Festival. This great annual event has been taking place regularly since it was established in 2002. The festival is held in Rochester, New York, at a number of different venues in the downtown area. Some of the more regular venues for the Rochester International Jazz Festival are: the Eastman Theatre, the Kilbourn Hall (Eastman School of Music), a church, a large tent and a number of clubs that can be easily reached on foot from Jazz Street (Gibbs). There are also a number of free concerts which are held on three different outdoor stages.
Since its establishment the Rochester International Jazz Festival has been growing steadily in size and support. Last year saw the attendance figures jump to record heights with 121 000 people making the most of the event – a dramatic 51% increase from the 2006 attendance. Likely the 2008 festival will continue this upward trend somewhat as the festival is fast becoming the nation’s largest and fastest growing music festival. Last year’s festival saw more than 600 artists from a total of 15 countries come together to perform 220 concerts. The event was definitely a feast for jazz lovers. Festival producer and artistic director John Nugent commented that last year’s event was “a phenomenal week of great music.” He also remarked that the addition of two new club venues and major new outdoor stage were likely two major factors that contributed to the massive increase in attendance figures.
This year’s festival will be taking place on June 13 to 21. 2008 will mark the 7th edition of this festival and it is sure to be even better than before. The festivities will take place in a total of 18 different venues that are all within walking distance from each other and the hotel where the JazzWeek Summit has its headquarters. The festival will see Jazz fans making their way from all the corners of the globe to enjoy the great mixture of free and ticketed events. The Rochester International Jazz Festival caters to people of all ages and fans planning to attend can look forward to a multi-dimensional and diverse lineup at this massive music festival.
