The 50th Grammy Awards – 10 February 2008

The Grammy Awards are an annual event presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States in recognition of exceptional achievements in the multi-million dollar record industry. The 50th Grammy Awards ceremony will take place on 10 February 2008 – a celebration of glitz, glamour and good music that music lovers and musicians alike are no doubt looking forward to.

To be eligible for nomination to receive a 2008 Grammy Award, recordings had to be released between 1 October 2006 and 30 September 2007. There are 110 categories divided up over 32 fields which cover a number of different genres of music. These fields include General, Pop, Dance, Traditional Pop, Rock, Alternative, R&B, Rap, Country, New Age, Jazz, Gospel, Latin, Blues, Folk, Reggae, World Music, Polka and Children’s Music. The balance of the fields include, among others, Spoken Word, Comedy and Musical Show, as well as skills related to the music industry such as Visual Media, Composing, Arranging and Packaging. Each category has been narrowed down to five possible winners.

The General Field is not restricted by genre and consists of the most prestigious and sought after award categories – Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. The five nominations for Record of the Year are Beyoncé’s ‘Irreplaceable’, Foo Fighters’ ‘The Pretender’, Rihanna Featuring Jay-Z with ‘Umbrella’, Justin Timberlake’s ‘What Goes Around…Comes Around’ and Amy Winehouse with ‘Rehab’.

The Grammy Award trophies are hand crafted, assembled and finished off in gold plating by Billings Artworks in Ridgeway, Colorado. Replica Grammy Awards are used for the ceremony and once the names of the winners are announced, John Billings engraves the actual award, loads them into his van and personally delivers them to the Grammy Award Academy.

An exciting feature of the 50th Grammy Awards is a competition where the winner gets to play on stage with the Foo Fighters. Contestants are restricted to using one of the specified string, woodwind or brass instruments and must submit their video audition by 20 January 2008.

The Grammy Awards are considered by many to be the music industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards and the 50th Grammy Awards ceremony is sure to provide an evening of great entertainment.
