2011 CMT Awards

The public plays a vital role in the CMT Music Awards, as it is the votes of fans that decide who the winners will be. Nashville, in Tennessee, is home to the awards that are hosted every June, and was inaugurated as the Music City News Country Awards in 1967. Awards are allocated to country television performances and music videos and before internet sites were available, fans would vote through the mail or by telephone. The main categories for the CMT Awards were male and female vocalist of the year, song of the year and entertainer of the year. In 2005, the name of the ceremony permanently became the CMT Music Awards and is held in conjunction with the CMA Music Festival.

This year, the awards ceremony was hosted on Wednesday evening, 8 June. Blake Shelton made a great impact on the awards, as he walked away with multiple awards. But Taylor Swift was at the top of her game, receiving one of the top awards, namely the Video of the Year. The video was for her release Mine. Miranda Lambert won the Female Video of the Year, for The House That Built Me. Taylor Swift was unable to attend the 2011 CMT Music Awards, as she is presently on tour, but spoke to her fans and audience members via a live video uplink. Neither Miranda Lambert or Blake Shelton were able to make it either. The show did feature some memorable events, such as wardrobe malfunction for Sheryl Crow and an unfortunate fall by Shania Twain as she walked toward the stage. Shania Twain took the fall in her stride and joked that she might put her shoes on auction. Lady Antebellum’s Hello World won the Group Video Award, while Best Duo Video went to Sugarland, and the Collaborative Video Award was won by Justin Beiber.

The evening was presented by Kidd Rock, and the audience was rewarded with wonderful live performances from artists such as Charles Kelley, Lady Antebellum, Wynonna Judd and Jason Aldean, who performed Dirt Road Anthem with the well known rap artist Ludacris. The CMT Music Awards was most definitely an evening of surprises, thrilling performances and entertainment.
