Coldplay Comes Out Tops at Q Awards
Every year the Q Awards pay tribute to the World’s best musicians. UK music magazine Q runs the annual award ceremony and it has been held regularly since 1990. Today the Q Awards are one of the biggest and best publicized music award ceremonies in Britain. The 2008 Q Awards were no different, with Coldplay going home the biggest winners after receiving two Q Awards.
The Q Awards ceremony took place on Monday night, October 6, 2008. Legendary British band Coldplay took home the most awards – one of which was the coveted ‘Best Act in the World Today’ award. Other groups nominated for the award were Oasis, Muse, Metallica and Kings of Leon, but in the end Coldplay was the clear winner. Upon receiving the accolade, Chris Martin remarked that he didn’t think Coldplay was the best act in the room or the world. Perhaps it is that sort of attitude that has largely contributed to the band being so popular. The group also received the ‘Best Album’ award for their ‘Viva La Vida, Or Death And All His Friends’ album.
The Last Shadow Puppets went home with the ‘Best New Act’ award, while Duffy managed to grab the ‘Breakthrough Artist’ accolade. The ‘Best Track’ award went to Keane for ‘Spiralling’, while the ‘Best Video’ award went to Vampire Weekend for ‘A-Punk’. John Mellencamp was chosen as the ‘Q Classic Songwriter’, while Meat Loaf’s ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ was chosen as the ‘Q Classic Song’. Cocteau Twins were given the ‘Q Inspiration’ award, while Glen Campbell was chosen for the ‘Q Legend’ award. The ‘Best Live Act’ award understandably went to the Kaiser Chiefs, while the ‘Q Innovation In Sound’ award went to Massive Attack. Adam Ant was chosen as the ‘Q Icon’, while Grace Jones scared up a storm in her hood, mask and horns when she accepted the ‘Q Idol’ award. David Gilmour was chosen as the recipient of the ‘Q Oustanding Contribution To Music’ accolade. The night, which took place at London’s Grosvenor House hotel, was star studded to say the least. The glamorous evening proved to be a memorable night for most of the winners and many will agree that those chosen for accolades in the end deserved to win.
