Summer 2014 Music Festivals

With summer underway in North America, be sure to slot in at least one (or more) events in the Summer 2014 music festival calendar. Here are a few highlights from this year’s festivals.
Taking place on June 6-8, New York City’s biggest music festival, The Governors Ball, embraces a host of genres and festival goers can expect to experience performances by some of the most popular artists around. The festival venue is Randall’s Island and among the not-to-be-missed acts in the lineup are Jack White, Grimes, Outkast, Axwell, Disclosure, Phoenix, Jenny Lewis, Janelle Monae, Sleigh Bells and AlunaGeorge.

Bonnaroo remains one of the most popular, and diverse, summer festivals. With the venue in Manchester, Tennessee, this year’s event is set to take place on June 12-15, featuring multiple music genres on multiple stages, as well as comedy, cinema, arts and a variety of entertainment. This year’s music lineup includes Shrillex, Frank Ocean, Jack White, Kanye West, Mastodon, Zedd, Danny Brown, Disclosure, Janelle Monae, the Flaming Lips, Elton John, Phoenix and Damon Albarn.

The Milwaukee Summerfest has a history going back to before Woodstock. This year’s event features 800 acts over a period of eleven days (June 25-29 and July 1-6). The list of must-see acts is lengthy, but here are some you won’t want to miss: Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Outkast, Usher, Ludacris, Arctic Monkeys, Zac Brown Band, Babe Ruthy, Phoenix and Hold Steady.

As the biggest black music festival in the United States, Essence Fest take place in New Orleans on July 3-6. In addition to an amazing lineup, the festival holds ‘Empower U’ motivational workshops, which are very popular. Festival goers can look forward to performances by Prince, Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Lionel Richie, Erykah Badu, Charlie Wilson, K. Michelle, Estelle, August Alsina, Stephanie Mills, and Sevyn Streeter, to mention a few.

Other festivals include Forecastle (July 18-20) in Louisville, Kentucky; Pitchfork Music Festival (July 18-20) in Chicago, Illinois; Gathering of the Juggalos (July 23-27) in Thornville, Ohio; Merge 25 (July 23-26) in Durham, North Carolina; Newport Folk Festival (July 25-27) in Newport, Rhode Island; Gathering of the Vibes (July 31-August 3) in Bridgeport, Connecticut; Newport Jazz Fest (August 1-3) in Newport, Rhode Island; Lollapalooza (August 1-3) in Chicago, Illinois; HARD Summer (August 2-3) in South El Monte, California; Bumbershoot (August 30-September 1) in Seattle, Washington; and Hopscotch (September 4-6) in Raleigh, North Carolina.
